A British traveler who was forced into a 10-day quarantine at a Heathrow hotel on his return to the UK claims he has moved twice because of a rodent infestation.

Anthony, 25, who refused to give a surname, said he saw an animal in his room twice.

He told Sky News, “It’s hell. It’s shocking. It’s a health and safety hazard … the hotel needs to close.”

Anthony pays £ 1,750 to stay at the government-approved Mercure Heathrow Hotel on his return from a visit to a Red Listed country in Brazil.

He claims the staff apologized and offered him free beer but no refund.

A statement from Mercure Hotels said: “An external pest controller has checked the hotel and found no evidence of pest activity. We take such complaints very seriously.

Kathryn Wainwright traveled back to Great Britain from Abu Dhabi – directly in ten days of hotel quarantine. She describes how it was.

“The safety of all our guests and employees is our top priority and continues to be our focus.

“The hotel continues to adhere to all quarantine policies, cleaning protocols and security measures set by the government.”

Anthony said, “If I slept, rats would have wandered around, crawled on tables and cutlery, sniffing cups, in the trash can … Rats transmit disease.”

“At 1:30 am I saw a rat come into view behind the refrigerator,” he added.

“I spoke to security. They took me to a new room.”

When he changed rooms, he said another guest asked, “Do you have one in your room too?”

Anthony said the hotel staff had admitted that those in other rooms had similar rodent problems. Due to COVID measures, there will be no cleaning service for the entire ten-day stay.

Anthony MP Rachael Maskell said reports of an infestation were “deeply worrying”.

“These guests feel like prisoners just traveling home,” she said.

The quarantine hotel Mecure London Healthrow has been infected by rats. My constituent has already moved twice; others too. Rats everywhere = a public health risk. The government forced him to pay £ 1,750. Private profit, not public safety. #refundnow Close the shop @sajidjavid @PHE_uk

She said she reported the situation to the Department of Health and Welfare.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Welfare said: “Guests should primarily discuss any issues with the hotel directly and we expect that they will do their best to address any concerns.

“Our top priority has always been to protect the public and the robust border and testing regime we have put in place is helping to minimize the risk of new variants in the UK.”
