Gardening and growing house plants has grown in popularity since the beginning of the pandemic, and many are opting for the meditative hobby.

But which US states have the most green fingers? Breck’s, one of the largest American importers of Dutch flower bulbs, recently launched a new survey that showcases the world’s gardening capitals. Results were measured by adding the number of times a city or state was mentioned with #GardensonInstagram.

The study analyzed around 10,000 social media posts, and the results are in: In America, the two largest garden cities are California (with 310 posts) and Michigan (with 159).

According to the report, “Michigan residents have a particular passion for gardening because tulip farms and flower farm cooperatives span the state from Holland to Detroit.” So it makes sense for the state to hold an annual Tulip Time Festival, which is a parade features, dance performances and other festivals celebrating the spring tulips in bloom, as well as the city’s rich Dutch history.

New York only came third on the list with 151 posts – but it’s home to the most tagged US city: NYC.

Breck’s overview also includes a look at the international garden capitals, which you can read about right here.
