Oh rats! Police say rodents stole marijuana stash price $500Ok

Colonies of rats scurried through Indian police warehouses, eating hundreds of kilograms worth of confiscated marijuana that was locked away as criminal evidence, CNN reported.

Authorities estimate that over 700 kilograms of weed may have been eaten by the furry obstructions of justice in the city of Mathura, Judge Sanjay Chaudhary told the BBC.

“Everything was under threat of rat infestation,” he warned.

The edible evidence was estimated at $500,000, Indy100 reported.

According to CNN, the court is also aware that the voracious burglars are anything but fearful of the law.

“Rats are small animals and are not afraid of the police,” the local justice system noted after police failed to produce the expected 200 kilograms of marijuana as evidence in court.

Far from surprised, a fellow justice in the city recalled when rodents bagged over 500 kilograms of cannabis in one borough.

“There is a rat threat in almost all police stations,” according to a court document. “Therefore, the necessary precautions must be taken to protect the confiscated cannabis.”

However, Mathura City Police Superintendent Martand Prakash Singh denies any presence of rats near the evidence lockers.

“There was no evidence of rats in the [report submitted to the court]’ he told CNN. “Police only mentioned that the cannabis seized was destroyed by rain and flooding.”

If the rats are to blame, it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve wanted to party in the Asian nation.

Cheeseaters were caught in “thousands” of liters of confiscated alcohol in Bihar state in 2017, according to the BBC. The lasting effects of the rats’ hangover were not reported at the time.
