easy-care perennials

As fun as it is to pick out new plants and watch them grow, there is no need to start over each year. When you garden with easy-care perennials, you can enjoy your plants year after year with a little care, explains Alfred Palomares, vice president of merchandising at 1-800-Flowers. When planning a perennial garden, first consider the climate and location.

“If you want to make perennials for your outdoor space, whether you have a garden or want to do container gardening, you really want to make sure that you think about the environment that you have,” says Palomares. “You want to take into account how much light you have in your room, whether you are getting a lot of sunlight or being in a more shady environment. This is really important to understand when planning the plant you will choose to go into your garden.”

Next, you need to think about the floor and spacing. Figuring out whether to plant your perennials directly in the ground or in pots can help figure out how many to buy. If your plant needs a specific type of soil that is very different from what you have naturally, deciding to pot your perennials can be an easy solution.

“You also want to think about how big these perennials will get over time, and what space you have and whether this works in your favor,” he says. “Because when you talk about low-maintenance systems, you want to make sure that you plan ahead so that the desired effect is achieved.”

Lastly, you want to consider when your plants will bloom. If you only plant daffodils they are super pretty until they wither in May and you have a bare garden for the rest of the year. Planning your garden in this sense is called “staging,” explains Palomares. Remember, you can always add annuals (plants that you will need to replant every year) to your perennials if you need an extra color that will last in the warmer months.

They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Hostas are a great perennial. Even when you have full sun, there is always a place in your garden that isn’t all of the sun – this is one of those great plants for that space. And they will spread. So you put them in the ground. This is one that offers the opportunity to give you additional plants year after year as the root system continues to grow. “Buy this pack of four hosta plants.
