Seven steps to properly removing rodent waste from your home
READfather , October 17, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — With the arrival of cooler temperatures across the country, rodents will begin to seek shelter from the elements — often in people’s homes. Rodents enter an estimated 21 million US homes each winter, threatening human health and property.

Mice and rats can transmit many diseases, including salmonella, typhus, infectious jaundice, rat-bite fever and the deadly hantavirus. A build-up of rodent droppings can cause allergies indoors. Because mice tend to urinate constantly, the risk of contamination of food surfaces and equipment is high. A small rodent problem can quickly become a full-blown infestation. In addition, mice can shed up to 18,000 fecal pellets annually — an estimated 50 times a day.
“House mice are most likely to cause problems at this time of year, so it’s important that homeowners take steps to keep them away before they become a problem,” he said Emory Matts, Board Certified Entomologist for Honest Pest Control. Matts also recommends following CDC guidelines for proper cleaning and disposal steps.
-
Step 1: Put on rubber or plastic gloves along with eye protection.
-
Step 2: Spray the urine and feces with a bleach solution or disinfectant until very wet. Leave it on for five minutes.
-
Step 3: Use paper towels to wipe up the urine or feces and detergent.
-
Step 4: Throw the paper towels in a covered trash can that will be emptied regularly.
-
Step 5: Wipe or swab the area with a disinfectant.
-
Step 6: Wash gloved hands with soap and water or sanitizer before removing gloves.
-
Step 7: Wash hands with soap and warm water after removing gloves, or use a waterless alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap is not available and hands are not visibly soiled.
