YORK COUNTY, Pennsylvania (WABC) – A park in York County, Pennsylvania shared a video of the Brood X Cicada in full swing.

The footage shows cicada shells on the ground and the insects covering a tree.

The Brood X cicadas are expected to appear in at least 15 states, including New York and New Jersey, this year.

After 17 years underground, billions of the noisy, winged insects emerge, mate for four to six weeks and then die.

It is a natural phenomenon that is rare in other parts of the world.

According to experts, the black and red periodic insects usually appear in the first week of May. However, the cool weather delayed their usual mass arrival.
