Alleghany school cleared of rodents, will reopen Monday

The Alleghany Highlands public school system has announced that Sharon Elementary has been cleared of rodents and will reopen on Monday.

The school was closed on Friday after rodents were discovered in the building.

The school system issued this statement Sunday night:

“Sharon Elementary School will reopen for classes on Monday, January 30, 2023.

“The school was closed on Friday January 27th as a precautionary measure after rodents were sighted in the building. School maintenance staff responded quickly and took action to remove rodents from the building, working with a licensed exterminator as part of that effort. Areas suspected of being contaminated have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

“Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate their efforts with the Virginia Department of Health and the Destruction Service. The building was continuously monitored over the weekend.

“AHPS gratefully acknowledges the support of the Sharon community, AHPS staff, Alleghany County Public Works and others in enabling us to effectively address this situation.”
