What’s up Doc? “Space Jam: A New Legacy” premiered in theaters and on HBO Max on Friday. The voice of many of the characters in Looney Tunes comes from one man, Jeff Bergman. Bergman is the voice actor who took on the role of the famous Bugs Bunny after the death of the original voice actor Mel Blanc. Sister station WTAE in Pittsburgh had a crazy conversation with Bugs himself who happens to have a great connection with Pittsburgh. In “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and dozens of other productions, Bergman is the voice behind Bugs Bunny my bachelor’s degree in Pittsburgh. And I love the city of Pittsburgh and the people, and my career really started in Pittsburgh, “said Bergman. Forty years ago, in 1981, I was fortunate enough to meet Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny,” said Bergman . “He lectured on performance in Pitt. I had just been walking around the cathedral and saw a sign that said ‘Mel Blanc: Voice of Bugs Bunny will be in Pitt.’ And I thought that will be fine, I’ll check that out. “He tracked down his hero Mel Blanc to his hotel.” When I knocked on the door, I heard a voice that sounded like Barney Rubble. And he opened the door up and he was wearing a bathrobe and was obviously getting ready to go to bed and it was ten o’clock at night, “he said.” I said, ‘Mr. Blanc, I’m such a big fan of You. I just saw your appearance in Pitt – could you give me a few minutes of your time, please? ‘ And he said, ‘Are you a Jew or an Italian?’ I said, ‘I’m Jewish,’ he said, come in. “Eight years later, Mel Blanc died and auditions began for his replacement for the voice of Bugs. Thousands of actors appeared. Bergman said Stephen Spielberg himself helped cast it. Three decades later, Bergman played Bugs Bunny during a pandemic. “We all put on our big boys pants and did it. And I can’t wait for everyone to see it,” he said. Bugs Bunny is probably Bergman’s most famous character, but nowhere near the only one. He can play Barney Rubble, Fred Flintstone, Yogi Bear, and Boo-Boo. Bergman hopes a new generation of fans will enjoy Space Jam: A New Legacy. “We’re paying homage to the first Space Jam, but Space Jam: A New Legacy is definitely a film in its own right,” said Bergman. “I got my bachelor’s degree in Pittsburgh. And I love the city of Pittsburgh and the people, and my career really started in Pittsburgh,” Bergman said.
While at the University of Pittsburgh, Bergman recalls meeting the man who started the role in the 1930s.

I had just walked around the cathedral and saw a sign that said ‘Mel Blanc: Voice of Bugs Bunny will be in Pitt.’ And I thought this was going to be fine, I’ll check that out. “
