The Walgreen drugstore in Princeton Shopping Center has been temporarily banned from selling groceries – but not other items such as prescription drugs, personal care products, and pain relievers – pending further verification by the Princeton Health Department.

Walgreen’s has been open for business since an “unsatisfactory” poster was posted at the store entrance on May 6th.

A customer’s complaint about a rodent infestation led to a shop inspection and the posting of the “Unsatisfactory” poster on May 6, said Jeffrey Grosser, Princeton health officer.

A cleaning crew was called in to clean up the store and the company’s trucks were there on May 6th.

The documentation of “Unsatisfactory” comes from the Princeton Department of Health’s order to the store not to sell groceries until the problem is resolved, Grosser said.

“Whenever there is a rodent infestation where food is sold or stored, there are always public health concerns. The purpose of the “Unsatisfactory” poster is to give the facility time to fix the problem, “said Grosser.

The situation is “ongoing” and based on the progress made by the pest control company, Grosser said on May 10th. The store is expected to start selling groceries again later in the week.
