There will be two barrier-free learning studios at the hub, which will be surrounded by four hectares of “living laboratories”, as well as a teaching garden that will be used for school workshops.
RHS Hilltop – The Home of Gardening Science has been in development for six years and aims to showcase the world of horticultural science “like never before” in the hope of contributing to a greener future.
A large exhibition space explores ways in which we can adapt and mitigate climate change in gardens to promote wellbeing and the environment, and enable wildlife and plants to thrive.
A total of 70 RHS scientists and students have now moved into the laboratory facilities and are working on several projects, including discovering the best plants to absorb pollution, reduce localized flooding, trap carbon and cool cities.
Schoolchildren can watch live experiments and talk to scientists to learn more about their work.
Professor Alistair Griffiths, RHS Director of Science and Collections, said: “Garden science has always been at the center of our work and today it is more important than ever as we are trying to create a more sustainable world.
“Thousands of school children attend RHS Wisley every year, and we want to inspire and equip them with the knowledge they need to create a greener future and ensure that growing plants, gardens and the support of nature are always part of our way of life are of central importance. “
For the first time, collections of dried plants, bugs, books and works of art will also be unveiled, dating back more than five centuries and providing the most complete record of Britain’s horticultural heritage.
Educational groups can opt for guided or self-guided visits to explore the new showroom and surrounding gardens.
School visits at RHS Garden Wisley
The team plans to resume schooling after the Easter break, pending government recommendations, and says safety measures are in place to assist children with a safe visit during Covid-19.
Wisley’s educational facilities include the bespoke Clore Learning Center, educational garden, and escorted access to the glass house.
