Great British Getaways: 10 Devon Summer Holidays to Book Now (Before They Sell Out)

“We’re desperate for something to look forward to,” said an email from a London couple who are booking my vacation rental in Dartmoor, Moorland View, for a break this summer. It’s a feeling confirmed by dozens of vacationers who, in four days of frenzied reservations, recently booked the cottage for most of the season. Devon’s vacation rental agents are reporting a similar increase, including Toad Hall Cottages, which posted a record 1,000 bookings in seven days. If you’ve been reluctant to book a getaway, it’s not too late. Although established hotels and vacation homes have limited summer availability, new properties, cottages in lesser-known locations, and city hotels still offer plenty of choice. Here’s our round-up of the best, including luxury coastal retreats, dog-friendly hotels, and wildlife tours. For more ideas, keep an eye on the tour operators’ social media feeds – this is where many post last minute availability and deals. 1. Stay at a new waterfront hotel, Salcombe. If you’re quick of the draw, this new luxury hotel on South Sands Beach in Salcombe has the best selection of dates that open the books for the summer start on Friday (February 5th). It belongs to the Harbor Hotels and promises 50 stylish rooms and suites, many with sea views, a spa, a beach bar and a relaxed restaurant. Double rooms start at £ 340 per night including breakfast (01202 400614; www.harbourhotels.co.uk/harbour-beach-club).
