Thanks to the transplant of prisoners, a nursing home gardening association now has a raised bed for the residents.

Beechfield Court, Thorntree, Middlesbrough, is an additional care facility and a large percentage of people are in need of care.

The Covid-19 crisis and months of restrictions have shaken the confidence of some of them, but thanks to the raised bed built by inmates at HMP Holme House, they can now enjoy the time outside again.

“Some of the people at Beechfield Court don’t want to leave their homes because they are spending so much time in them because of Covid, and we wanted something that would encourage them,” said Carol Jackson, group communications manager at Dale Care.

After talking to local residents, some of them suggested a gardening association.

Carol turned to Stockton Prison to ask if an elevated flower bed and plant bed could be built for her.

“They were fantastic and after going through the measurements etc they organized a planter for us that was tall enough for wheelchair users to join in,” said Carol.

The wood was cut to the prison prior to transport and assembled on the grounds of Beechfield Court.

The raised bed was set up and filled with soil, and the prison team also provided plants, flowers and vegetables.

Everyone enjoyed watching it come together and residents can’t wait to start their project with the green thumb.

“It’s something that interests people, gets them outside, and gives them something to focus on.

“This is about helping local people from a local prison with prisoners who are giving back to society,” said Carol.
