Casino chips are the unconventional ammunition used by the Stockdale Library supporters to fight termites.
Termite damage to the library building resulted in the Sarah Bain Chandler Public Library relocating its collection to 602 West Main St. in Stockdale last year. The underbody of the old building could no longer safely bear the weight of the metal shelves and the traffic of visitors. The library’s contents have been relocated a block and a half south to a smaller building that the City of Stockdale currently rents from the First Baptist Church of Stockdale.
“We received a $ 50,000 furniture grant for the interior design, but we have to find or raise money for the building,” said Nicki Stohr, Wilson County Public Libraries director. “We welcome financial support from individuals, companies and organizations in the community to help us achieve our goal.”
To raise funds for a new library in Stockdale, the Wilson County Education Foundation Inc. – whose mission is to arrange, promote, and plan the construction of new libraries in Wilson County – is holding a casino night fundraiser.
The foundation promotes literacy and education in Wilson County and has 501 (c) 3 charitable status, said Stohr. The foundation is working with the Stockdale Public Library Advisory Board to make this project successful.
