The Environment Ministry and Petah Tikva Township released a joint statement instructing residents what to do if they encounter a school of Formoson termites, a species known as “the world’s most harmful termites” hatched from their nests and fled at the beginning of the mating season.

The public was reminded that termites are not dangerous to humans, but can cause significant property and environmental damage. It is therefore important to locate the nests and treat the problem at its source.

The organization’s statement urges locals to report nests if they find them and urged “if they encounter a swarm of flying terminus … to the community in the coming days.”

This would allow them to identify more nests in the area and continue their research on the Formoson termites.

Termites were first discovered in Israel about a year ago in the eastern part of the city by the Ministry of Environment and the Petah Tikva community. Two nests were then identified and measures taken to treat the damage.

In a comprehensive action organized by the ministry on Tuesday evening with the participation of the Petah Tikva community, the nature and park authority and researchers from Tel Aviv University, the location of three termite nests in public spaces was discovered.

Residents were told that termites that penetrate buildings and living spaces can be sprayed with insecticides and that if wooden furniture or objects are damaged, an exterminator must be called.
