On July 23, the Northern Pathways Equine Center is hosting “The Beginner’s Garden,” an organic horticultural fundamentals course starting at 6:30 pm at 7889 Lyman Road in Kaleva.
Participants will learn about the easiest vegetables to grow, companion plants to reduce pests, and the use of simple organic fertilizers. Participants can also try some simple vegetable recipes and take herb seedlings home to plant indoors or outdoors.
The Northern Pathways Equine Center has been running a harvest program since 2016 when a grant from the Manistee Community Foundation enabled the farm to offer “delicious and nutritious snacks” to visitors. This course is a natural continuation of showing attendees how easy it can be to add to the family’s food bills by growing some vegetables and herbs, “a press release said.
Community gardener Jan Exo will teach the class. Reserve a seat at 231-970-1001. If the weather is nice, this event will take place outdoors.
Organizers ask attendees to bring a mask if they are not vaccinated and to be ready to adhere to social distancing guidelines. The number of participants is limited. A donation of 10 euros is requested.
