The Ministry of Agriculture has set itself the goal of supporting a further 47,350 families as part of its home garden program and 500 women as part of its “Women in Agriculture” program. Agriculture Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy says they have provided seed packets to households in urban and peri-urban areas around Fiji, and to date, 77,888 households have been assisted under this program.
He says this initiative will significantly improve food security by giving people direct access to nutrient-rich foods, increased purchasing power through savings on food bills, and a replacement food supply due to the potential decline in production and trade due to COVID-19.
Reddy says that as part of their Women in Agriculture program, which has a $ 300,000 increase this fiscal year, they intend to provide more women with nursery supplies, small farming tools, and planting supplies to ensure they get on with their ventures are successful, especially through these attempts at times.
