Eight restaurants, lodging facilities and other businesses in the Wichita area were found to be noncompliant during the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s food safety and lodging inspections conducted December 25-31.

Information on the Sedgwick County businesses and their violations, compiled as of January 9, appears below with a summary of the issues inspectors found in their reports. More than 50 companies surveyed December 25-31 passed their inspections with few or no violations. You can view these at www.foodsafety.kda.ks.gov/FoodSafety/Web/Inspection/PublicInspectionSearch.aspx.

Failing an inspection does not necessarily mean a business has to close; that is rare. Most violations are minor and will be corrected immediately upon inspection.

Businesses violate government regulations when they have too many violations or certain types of issues that may increase a customer’s risk of contracting a foodborne illness or when an issue cannot be addressed immediately, such as: B. Pest infestation and sanitation problems.

If a company fails, it is usually re-examined within 10 days.

Recent out-of-compliance inspections

Comfort Inn East Wichita, 9525 E. Corporate Hills Dr. in Wichita – A total of 10 violations during a December 28 license inspection in which it was inspected as both a food and lodging facility. Cited for not individually wrapping apples offered to customers to protect them from contamination, no food thermometer, ice buckets kept in restrooms, pool pH was incorrect, emergency lights broken, hotel did not log carbon monoxide and smoke detector checks, Fire extinguishers were not charged, bed bugs in one room, no pet friendly sign advising guests that pets are welcome. Next inspection date listed: January 7th.

El Mexico Cafe, 2544 S. Seneca in Wichita – Six violations during a December 29 inspection following a complaint. Cited for not having enough sanitizer in bucket of wipes, tub of cooked pork rojo and beef tacos in refrigerators not getting cold fast enough, no test strips to measure sanitizer concentration, seal on walk-in cooler “is tattered and partially falling off.” ‘, too much disinfectant in a sink. Next inspection date listed: January 9th.

Family Dollar Store, 1031 S. Meridian in Wichita – Three violations during a December 30 follow-up inspection. Cited about packaging of crackers, cereal and waffle cookies that “had been chewed by rodents”, “fresh evidence of rodents” and new rodent droppings on cereal and cookie aisle, approximately 100 rodent droppings in rear storage area under shelves. Next inspection: March 1st.

Great Wall Restaurant, 407 E. Pawnee in Wichita – Ten violations during a December 29 inspection following a complaint. Cited over a bowl of raw chicken stored in a cooler over raw carrots, raw shrimp stored over cooked shrimp, cooked noodles and a garlic and oil mixture were stored at room temperature, the restaurant stored prepared foods in contact with Cardboard boxes, dirty and dirty wok, cookie jar in sink, leaking hand sink, no soap on sink, no paper towels on sink. Next inspection date listed: January 9th.

Hampton Inn Wichita East, 9449 E. Corporate Hills Dr. in Wichita – Four violations during a December 28 license inspection. Quoted about boiled potatoes not being kept hot enough, the pocket cooler not keeping the yogurt cold enough, no food thermometer, no paper towels at the kitchen hand sink. Next inspection date listed: January 7th.

Las Rosas Wichita Mexican Grill, 1050 W. 47th St. South in Wichita – Three violations during a routine inspection on December 27th. Cited because several items including stuffed chili peppers and diced tomatoes were not labeled with their cooking dates, cooked rice was stored in a t-shirt bag instead of a food-safe container, a food thermometer didn’t work. The company complied with a violation at its follow-up inspection on January 6th.

Ninza Sushi Bar, 8428 W. 13th St., Ste. 100 in Wichita – Seven violations during a December 30 inspection listed as a follow-up to a government order. Cited above a “little winged insect” in a Hennessy liquor bottle, raw eggs layered over shredded imitation crabs, and raw chicken layered over containers of raw beef, the restaurant thawed imitation crabs at room temperature in a hand sink, food thermometers were improperly calibrated hand basins were used to store relish and imitation crabs, bottles of soap and bleach were unlabelled, bottles of cleaner were stored with the nozzle down after soda. Next inspection: February 28th.

Snacks, 6209 N. Broadway in Wichita – Two violations during a December 28 follow-up inspection. Cited because of a broken water line that caused the faucets to lack pressure, the store did not close and was told by the Kansas Department of Agriculture that it had no water. The business voluntarily closed its soda fountains and coffee makers. Next inspection date listed: January 8th.
