PORTLAND, Maine (CBS) – Maine beachgoers say their feet have turned black after a day at the seaside.
People along the south Maine coast reported that their feet turned various shades of gray and black. They also said that they cannot wash off the paint.
State officials say it is likely pigment from the bodies of flying insects that wash ashore.
“I’ve heard of tar feet, so I assumed,” York-based Kate Phelps told WGME-TV. “We noticed it when we were here and thought it was going to come off in the shower. We were quite surprised that it didn’t work out. “

Some told WGME that the color was slowly disappearing, but not completely.
