Green fingered Falkirk care home residents rewarded for gardening skills

Newcarron Court Care Home on Ronades Road won the top prize in two categories of the Advinia in Bloom competition – winning the titles ‘Ground to Fork’ and ‘Special Place/Sensory Garden’, beating out 35 other entrants across the country through.

Hazel Phillips, Activities Coordinator said: “We didn’t expect to win the two categories but when we found out all the hard work paid off. We had a lot of support from the residents as well as from family and friends at the nursing home.

“A special thanks also goes to Police Scotland whose youthful volunteers have been amazing over the last few months and really helped transform the gardens into a beautiful area for residents to enjoy.

“This year we have grown leeks, carrots, beets, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, cabbage, potatoes, apples, rhubarb and a variety of herbs, and our chef has used them to create wonderful dishes for residents.

“We even made jars of jam and beetroot that we sold to employees to raise some money for our house fund.”

Nursing home resident and avid gardener Susan Elliot, 89, must have felt good about the contest entry when she said, “These are the winners” as she harvested the bountiful beetroot crop.

Robert Penman, 78, was just another gardening volunteer, and his family kindly donated benches and other items to beautify the area.
