How one can eliminate flying bugs in your homehome

Flying insects are some of the hardest insects to get rid of in your home as they are easily accessed through open windows and doors and even the smallest of cracks, but are less easily trapped than the soil-loving varieties.

Read on to find a few ways you can get rid of these pesky pests for good.

1. Make a homemade trap for flying insects

This nifty trick with an empty soda bottle is a simple and unobtrusive way to keep flies from floating around your house.

With a tempting natural bait, the winged beasts can get into the bottle easily, but find it quite difficult to escape again.

How to create your own bug trap:

• Cut the plastic bottle with an empty plastic bottle just below the tapered neck, turn the tapered neck over and insert it into the bottom of the bottle.
• You can keep the lid on, but you’ll need to punch a hole through it to let the flies in (the lid helps ensure they can’t escape).
• Fill with the bait of your choice: overripe fruit, 50/50 water-sugar mixture, sweet-smelling dish soap or honey mixed with water to make a sticky solution.

2. Identify the flying animal

It may not always be easy to determine which flying pest is floating around. So it is worth looking out for the orbit.

Here are some common beasts to watch out for:

• Fruit flies usually form a B-line for your delicious bowl of fruit or something sweet.
• Clothes moths want to hold onto your favorite jumpers so you can find them in the bedrooms.
• Drain flies accumulate, you guessed it, your bathroom and kitchen drains. So check for any leaks and fix them immediately.
• Mushroom mosquitoes will live their best life in your plants, so exercising that green thumb is pretty handy.

3. Take out the trash

Most flying insects are drawn to smelly areas of your home. So take out the garbage regularly.

Make sure you also empty your compost caddies, rinse and recycle empty wine or beer bottles so as not to attract insects with a sweet tooth, and cover your bins, especially in the warmer months.

4. Keep your home clean

It goes without saying, but most flying insects like to hang out in your kitchen area.

Complete the buffet by clearing dirty dishes, clearing up after your pets including their litter and dog bowls, and wiping the surfaces with antibacterial spray that is sure to invite the unwanted guests.

5. Store food

Make sure you always store food in closets and sealed containers, and that spills are cleaned up promptly.

For example, any sugar draws flies into your home and grain moths or other stored goods pests like to devour loose flour, seeds and grain.

6. Find out your entry way

It is normal for some flying insects to enter through open windows and doors. However, if you see a lot more than a few, consider mosquito screens if you don’t have one, or if you do, have them checked for holes or damage and fixed.

It’s also worth keeping an eye out for small cracks and crevices that the little hobbyists may penetrate through and fill them with sealant for small cracks or wire wool for larger crevices.
