The Brood X Cicadas are about to finish their visit – 17 years in the making – in which they emerge from the ground to mate and fly around us. Her short above-ground lifespan is about to end and now her children are looking forward to 2038.

But all of those cicada corpses you see around town and in your garden are actually beneficial to the ecosystem: they provide the nitrogen needed for the trees.
