According to the Daily Record, Jaye Bannon bought the orthopedic mattress for her mother, Susanne McKee of Furniture Scotland, after she came across the company on Instagram. The mattress and bed came in sealed packaging at their Glasgow home and appeared to be in good condition.

But it wasn’t long before Grandma Ms. McKee noticed insect bites on her face and body.

Her family initially believed the bites were the result of Ms. McKee, who slept with the window open and inadvertently allowed insects to enter her bedroom.

That all changed when the 51-year-old noticed a crack in the mattress lining and decided to pull on it just to make the terrible discovery. Ms. McKee noted that the apparently fresh mattress was padded with fresh felt and new material, including a mold covered and heavily soiled dirty mattress.

Ms. McKee’s daughter said, “I found the bed on Instagram and ordered it over a WhatsApp call. They said it was a brand new bed and mattress. When it came it looked beautiful.

“There weren’t any problems with the bed – there were just a few small spots where you could see the felt hadn’t been pulled properly over the frame, but once it was done it was fine.

“The mattress was in a sealed package that we opened.

“Then my mother got bites all over her face. After a few days she noticed them.

“I thought it was because she slept with the window open, so she kept it closed for a couple of days, but she still got it.

“She also had to take her couch out because she was in bed and then went on the couch so we have to clean it up.”

Ms. Bannon has since contacted Furniture Scotland to complain and was initially offered a replacement mattress, which the family refused. The company has since offered a full refund for the dirty mattress. The family has also asked Furniture Scotland to pay for the fumigation of the house to get rid of the bugs.

A spokesman for Furniture Scotland admitted having delivered the defective goods but said they did not know that the mattress had been recovered.

They said, “We delivered the mattress to her, but we had no idea that the mattress was being recovered.

“We have been trading for eight years and have never heard of it.

“We take the manufacturer’s word that everything is brand new and up to the standards we agreed with the factory.

“In terms of the solution, we offered her a full refund, as well as the cost of the pest control and the new carpet as soon as we were made aware.”

The company also said it had immediately recalled the range of mattresses and that the investigation into the events is still ongoing.
