The gardening expert and presenter told how she transformed the grounds of her country house from an empty top into a wildflower meadow
Gardening expert and TV presenter Carol Klein is back on the screens in her Channel 5 series. Gardening with Carol Klein, where the TV star invites viewers again to the breathtaking grounds of their Glebe Cottage.

She announced that she and her husband, Neil, moved to Devon from London in 1978 after getting a teaching job in the area. When it came to house hunting, said Carol, whose love for horticulture began at a young age “All she wanted” was a nice big garden but said real estate agents weren’t listening and showing their properties with little green space.

“They tried to get us to buy a small townhouse, but I didn’t care about the house,” she said when she video-linked from her greenhouse. “I just wanted a garden! Then we found this place and it’s just perfect.”
The hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford then asked what the place looked like when the family first moved in, to which she replied: “There was no garden! There were many, many old cars, an old shed – and I had to get in there and take all the old cars out.”

Photos of the garden before Carol renovated it flashed on the screen, showing an overgrown field full of debris, rubbish and long grass.
In comparison, the garden is now a lush green paradise with a wildflower meadow, an impressive vegetable patch and a number of different trees, including one that the late mother gave to the presenter almost 35 years ago. In an interview with Radio Times, the former Gardeners World host said that there are many plants in the garden “Connections to people and places, each with a story.”
