The East Baton Rouge Master Gardener Association will be teaching ferns and pruning at the Greenwell Springs Regional Branch Library, 11300 Greenwell Springs Road, Baton Rouge, Thursday, April 15, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

Registration is free and open to the public. Space is limited to the first 25 people who arrive. All attendees must follow the library’s guidelines on social distancing.

Louisiana Master Gardener Terry Rehn will speak first about “Ferns in the Home Landscape”.

“Ferns are an underutilized plant in our landscape,” said Rehn. “You can add green, foliage structure and color to your garden.”

Rehn will focus on ferns that work in our region and the cultural requirements to grow them.

Claire Fontenot, also a master gardener from Louisiana, will talk about “pruning in the garden”.

She will go through the “what, when, why, where, and how” of pruning to improve both the appearance and health of plants, shrubs, and trees.

“Many people associate pruning with controlling the size of a shrub or tree that is too large,” said Fontenot, “but there are many other reasons for pruning.”

The next presentations by the East Baton Rouge Master Gardener Association, part of their library series, will be held on May 7th at the Fairwood Branch Library. The themes are “Beyond Basil: All Season Herbs” and “Favorites for Fruit Production in Louisiana”.
