A frustrated resident beats her local authority for not reacting “sensibly” to the constant “dirty condition” of a side street near her property.

Miss Watson, who moved to Crescent Road in Middlesbrough a little over a year ago, has since complained to the Council “more than ten times” about the unsanitary conditions.

The 31-year-old Care Home manager explained how people tore open garbage bags and rotted the contents, including moldy food, needles, dog poop, and dirty pads and diapers.

She said the detritus attracted both rats and mice, “terrifying” her eight-year-old daughter and making the place a terrible place to live.

“The trash cans come and collect the trash cans, but they don’t clean the floor,” she explained. “I spent a fortune on the house and it is terrible to see it.”

She attributes a large part of the problem to a gate that gives access to the alley, which she believes is “always open”.

She added: “I made several proposals to the Council, for example the introduction of video surveillance, and I asked them to take more responsibility for the security of the gate.

“But they don’t seem to care, and that’s because they don’t have to live here.”

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “The conditions in this alley are simply unacceptable and where we can identify those responsible they can face prosecution.

“We clean all the alleys once a week as part of our routine work and that will continue to be the case – but we also need the local community to do their part.

“The residents have keys to the alley gates and should be locked and only opened for essential access.

“If you leave them open, dumpsters and dump trucks can go in and they don’t care about the mess they leave for others to clean up.

“We will be sending letters to residents to remind them to keep the gates closed and we will always look at where CCTV can help us eradicate such problems.

“We would also like to encourage anyone who has problems like this to contact them and we will deal with them as soon as possible.”
