Debbie Zufelt is relieved that after a recent heat treatment she won’t be forced to clean up the dead bed bug carcasses in her Edgewater unit.

She learned on Friday that the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB), which owns the Edgewater Apartments on Lakeshore Drive, will be looking into the mess.

With one arm in a cast and a PICC – or a peripherally inserted central catheter – in the other, Zufelt told The Nugget earlier this week that she could not physically complete the job and was traumatized by the situation.

Mark King, DNSSAB’s CEO, confirmed that the mess will be fixed.

“We have seven active units (with bed bugs),” he said Friday morning. “Good Riddance has performed heat treatments and two units are being retreated due to high activity.”

King said the hoarding issue within the building is also being addressed and the staff are working to mitigate the seemingly lingering problem.

“We are dealing with the topic. I can see changes, ”he added, noting that there has been a discussion with the North Bay Fire Chief about concerns about hoarding and the risk of fire.

Zufelt said sometime on Friday, all tenants received a notification that apartment staff would be performing visual inspections from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 28

“I’m so relieved, but I think about it for 24 hours. I couldn’t rest. Luckily I have a good friend who let me take over her bed and she sleeps on the couch, ”she said.

“As long as I live here in this building, I won’t stop looking for bed bugs. And I’ll just keep praying, I can’t find anyone. “

Zufelt said renters have been dealing with the recurring bed bug annoyance for 10 years.

She is eagerly awaiting the day when she can return to her apartment and be reunited with her dog. The dog lives with their dog sitter while the apartment is cleaned.
