Flies are disgusting!

For those who don’t know or need a quick refresher, flies carry a lot of bacteria. From the moment they land on your plate or table, they carry those nasty bacteria to the surface of the table, the food, and even your skin. In addition to the bacteria they carry, they also love to lay eggs wherever they land. Those eggs turn into maggots, and you don’t really want that in your house either. Aside from trying to fly swatter them, or going out and buying repellents and fly traps (which can get expensive), how do you keep these pests away?

DIY hack to repel flies

I found this hack on Facebook and it actually works. Now you probably just want to know what it is, right? ok ok According to Housemaking.com, this is all you need for this trick:

  • sturdy freezer bag
  • a pinch of table salt
  • Splash of lime juice
  • a few coins
  • water

To assemble this you want:

First, fill the freezer bag with all the other items on the list. Once sealed, hang the bag over your door or other insect-prone spot near your home. Wherever you hang the bag, just make sure it’s in a spot that will reflect sunlight. If you want to hang the bag somewhere in your house, indoor lighting will also suffice.

Why does this hack work?

It seems kind of silly that a clear bag full of water and a few coins could actually keep flies away, doesn’t it? However, it actually works. Apparently shiny coins in the water are an unpleasant sight for flies. According to Newsner:

Flies have compound eyes, and as a result the device creates an illusion in which they don’t want to go near the bags – or so it is claimed.

Take the common housefly, for example. These insects are born with a huge pair of eyes relative to their size. These eyes are made up of 3,000 to 6,000 lenses and see the world in a mosaic pattern. Pretty cool right?

The coins in the water break create a refraction of light, but this confuses them and forces them to leave.
