ON A group of green-fingered residents at a care center in Chester has set up a new garden club to further enhance the beautiful exterior of the house and create a new vegetable garden where the catering team is supplied with fresh produce.
Led by Gwen Lewis, the team at Grosvenor Manor on Hatchmere Lane in Chester have rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty as they prepare the garden for the spring and summer months to come.
The borders are weeded, the existing shrubbery is trimmed and the large outdoor planters of the house are redeveloped with a selection of new bulbs that bloom at staggered times and provide a variety of blooms over the course of the seasons.
In addition, the talented team has created an excellent new vegetable garden. Plant a variety of herbs, fruits, and vegetables that will hopefully result in fresh organic produce that the chef can use as part of the house’s gourmet menu, which changes daily.
Wellbeing Coordinator at Grosvenor Manor Lisa Forth said, “Like most people, our residents had plenty of time to appreciate their surroundings during the pandemic and benefited from the home’s beautiful garden which has been a constant source of health for the past 12 years Joy was months.
“With many commenting on how much they used to enjoy gardening, Gwen suggested that they get more involved. The project originated from there; The residents’ families have donated plants, bulbs, gloves, spades and forks. We also bought a greenhouse to care for the seedlings as they grow and to provide shelter for the team when they are outside. “
The garden club currently meets twice a week and is growing in size, with more residents participating each time. In addition to the vegetable garden and general upkeep, the team has also taken care of Grosvenor Manor’s memorial garden and front family garden, both of which will be in bloom with colorful flowers this summer for everyone to enjoy.
Gwen said, “I’ve always enjoyed gardening at home. It was a place where I relaxed and loved taking care of it during the changing seasons. It’s great to be able to move on now that I’m at Grosvenor Manor and we look forward to seeing the results of our hard work when the garden comes to life in the spring. “
Lisa Forth concluded: “For our residents, the benefits of the garden club are immense. It provides positive social engagement and entertainment, improves wellbeing, improves dexterity, reduces depression, and provides relaxation, sensory experiences, and satisfaction.
It turns out to be a real passion project and it’s wonderful to see how the residents really enjoy themselves. “
