WOODSTOCK, Ga., August 1, 2021 / PRNewswire-PRWeb / – Summer break is almost over and before we know it, schools and universities are going to resume their sessions. While purchasing school supplies and a new cloakroom could be a priority in the next few days, Bug Busters, Inc, a pest control company that Georgia and Tennessee, encourages parents and students to also spend some time brushing up on bed bug prevention tips.

“Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers and thrive in densely populated locations,” said Court Parker, CEO of Bug Busters. “That makes classrooms and dormitories the perfect place for bed bugs to settle in.”

A study by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and the University of Kentucky found bed bug infestations are increasing in many different types of homes, including schools and universities. According to the survey, in 2013 47 percent of those questioned had treated themselves against bed bugs in student dormitories, while 41 percent had reported bed bug infestations in schools and daycare centers.

NPMA experts recommend the following tips for Grade K-12 students to avoid bringing bed bugs home:

  • Parents should regularly check their children’s belongings for hitchhiking bed bugs
  • If the school has reported an infestation, keep all related items in a sealed plastic bucket
  • Wash and dry clothes that come back from school in hot temperatures
  • Ask the school management if they have any plans to detect and get rid of bed bugs

The NPMA also advises college students to take measures to protect themselves against bed bugs, including:

  • Check suitcases completely before repacking them for a return to school, especially after summer trips
  • Before placing the sheets on the bed in the dormitory, check the mattress seams, especially at the corners, and the box spring beds for any tell-tale stains or stains
  • Before unpacking, thoroughly inspect the entire room, including behind the headboard and in sofas and chairs
  • Examine all “used” furniture for bed bugs before moving them to dorms or off campus
