Recently, one of the largest commercial and residential pest control companies in the country released its annual list of the 50 Best Cities in the United States that Have the Most Bed Bug Treatments. Chicago moved up two places from last year’s list to be number one. The cities that follow closely behind are Baltimore, Washington, DC, Detroit, and Columbus, OH.

Bed bugs are small, flat, parasitic insects that normally feed on the blood of humans and animals while they sleep. They are experts at hiding, which can make them difficult to find. The presence of bed bugs can be a constant nuisance as they often cause itching and disturbed sleep in people who live, work, or visit an infested building. Some people may also experience allergic reactions caused by their presence.

?? Bed bug infestation can occur almost anywhere ?? said Joe Frasca, senior vice president of marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.? These parasitic insects have been found in all areas from homes and apartments to luxury resorts. Bed bugs were also a problem on trains, airliners, and cruise lines. Fortunately, EMSL offers an easy-to-use test kit that requires a dust sample which is then sent to the laboratory where it is analyzed using highly sensitive DNA-based techniques. Testing is critical as buildings or businesses can be temporarily closed due to an infestation.

EMSL also sponsored an educational video about bed bugs, which can be viewed at https://youtu.be/gfAt_UAgNqA.
