Students at Islamic Senior High School (SHS) in Sagnerigu Municipality in the North Region have no choice but to huddle and eat in a run-down building as there is no decent dining hall.
Female students at the school are also forced to sleep in an overcrowded dormitory due to limited accommodation.
According to the students, the infrastructural challenges in the school hinder smooth academic work and ask the government and other organizations to come to their aid.
Citi News Northern Region correspondent Diana Ngon, who visited the school, noted that the ceiling in the dining room was rotting with broken slats and dilapidated concrete floors.
Since there are no doors at the entrance, the students there sometimes struggle with animals in the hallway.
It hasn’t seen a facelift since the school was founded some 25 years ago.
The residence block, originally designed for 240 students, now houses over 1000 students, while the school’s current population of 3000 continues to grow.
Female students alone make up almost 2,000 of the population. Some of the girls talked Citi News Their dormitory has no ventilation and is infested with bed bugs.
Apart from the canteen and dormitories, the school has neither an administration building nor enough classrooms. The science lab is equally asking for equipment.
Meanwhile, a one-story classroom project begun a few years ago has stalled. The school’s principal, Abdul Rahman Manan, is appealing to the government and others to come to the school’s aid.
