A termite informally known as the “super termite” was found in Israel eight months ago, and now the Ministry of Environment is working to eradicate the dangerous species from the country, according to N12. A specimen of the Formoson termite first found in Petakh Tikva, known as “the world’s most harmful termites,” has finally been caught in an underground surveillance station and now the ministry is working on a plan to rid the Jewish state of this invasive troublemaker Termites that are able to eat more and reproduce faster than any other termite. The species is said to have originated in China and later spread around the world due to its insatiable appetite. Termites are known for their ability to cause extensive damage that incurs high costs to destroy and repair.More than a billion dollars of damage is caused by termites each year in the United States alone, according to the NPR. The ministry set up a termite task force in September to work on finding a method of destruction and advising local authorities and exterminators. The task force includes representatives from the ministries of health and agriculture, as well as destruction experts and academics. The ministry is now feeding these termites growth inhibitors that can attract and kill an entire nest of these pests. With the help of underground monitoring stations, Israeli experts are now integrating the use of this toxic bait to hopefully eradicate the species in time.

A colony of these insects can reach millions of people and travel up to 100 meters from their nests. It thrives in the hot and humid weather that is common for Israel, but it is not dangerous for humans to just penetrate the underground infrastructure that Israel holds – through wood, plastic, concrete, and soft metals. The termites are expected to flee as part of their mating season, with the ministry urging the public to alert them of any sight of these pesky pests. In this natural life cycle, thousands of termites are attracted to light sources in clusters across Israel. Israeli experts told N12 that this will be the only time in the year for the Israelis that the termites emerge from their nests and fly through the air, and if the ministry is informed immediately of an observation of this occurrence, the ministry can come up with best practices in order to do so to try to prevent the termites from spreading across the country.
