A hospitality expert on TikTok goes viral for her video hack to scan your hotel room for bed bugs

Hotel industry expert Hal Whitingwho passes by @haleewithaflair on TikTok recently posted a video in which she instructs the viewer on how to make sure their hotel room is bed bug-free before settling in (just in time for vacation trips). Halee says she has worked in the hotel business for 15 years, owns a hotel sales support company, and uses this technique when checking into a room.

She says to take these steps before you start unpacking to ensure the room is bed bug-free:

  • Darken the room as much as possible because bed bugs are nocturnal.
  • Then use the light on your phone to start the search.
  • Pull back the covers of the bed and examine the creases of the mattress, focusing your search on the corners and creases.
  • Also check the mattress topper, if any.
  • Make sure you also look for signs that bed bugs were present, like blood stains and shed exoskeletons from them molting.
  • Halee recommends checking couches or curtains as well, but says they’ll be concentrated near the mattress most of the time.

The video has garnered millions of views and thousands of likes and comments. In other videos on her site, she answers some frequently asked questions about bed bugs and debunks some myths about how bed bugs are only found in run-down hotels. She also posted a video telling you what to do if you find bed bugs in your room.

Halee says hotel guests need to look out for their own best interests, but insist bed bugs are not that common and fear of them shouldn’t put you off booking a hotel.
