These Iowa Cities Are Among the Worst in America for Bed Bugs

Your bedroom should be the only place where you can escape the stress of everyday life.

But when you’re dealing with bed bugs, there’s no rest in your bedroom.

So which places in America are most commonly associated with bed bugs?

Pest control company Orkin has released its annual list of the worst US cities for bed bugs, based on the number of treatments the company had to perform in 2022.

For the third year in a row, Chicago is the most bed bug infested city in America.

  4. Cleveland-Akron, Ohio
  5. The angel
  6. Detroit
  7. Indianapolis
  8. Baltimore
  9. Washington, D.C
  10. Columbus, Ohio

Two cities in Iowa made the top 50.

Cedar Rapids is up a spot this year to 31st, while Davenport fell a few spots to 37th.

Other area cities that made the list include Omaha (32nd) and Lincoln (50th) in Nebraska.

Orkin recommends regularly checking your home for signs of bed bugs by checking the labels and stitching on the mattress, behind baseboards, headboards, electrical outlets, and picture frames.

They also advise the following SLEEP Method of checking for bed bugs when traveling:

  • SSearch the hotel room for signs of an infestation. Look for tiny, inky stains on mattress seams, in upholstery, and behind headboards.
  • LIft and search in bed bug hiding places: the mattress, box spring and other furniture, as well as behind baseboards, pictures and even torn wallpaper.
  • ELift the luggage away from the bed and the wall. The safest places are in the bathroom or on countertops.
  • EExamine your luggage carefully when repacking and upon returning from a trip. Always keep luggage away from the bed.
  • PWhen you get home, thread all of the clothes in your luggage that are suitable for tumble drying into the dryer for at least 30-45 minutes on the highest setting.
