80-year-old Tito Okema and his 75-year-old wife, Bicentina Alal, had kept the bills in a metal case and were shocked when they opened the box to check the money.

Devastated by termites
The Independent reports that the banknotes were worth 20,000 (35 pieces), 10 pieces 50,000 and 36 notes of 10,000 pieces, some of which were destroyed beyond recognition.
When they checked their money box a month ago, Alal announced that all the money was intact, but they noticed that the metal case was covered in mud.
When they opened it, they were shocked to find that all the notes had been ravaged by termites.

Saved by business
According to Alal, the couple are saving what little money they make selling papyrus mats, poultry, dried cassava chips, and pets.
She added that every now and then they would take some money out of the suitcase hidden under their bed to treat or support their children.

Alal and Tito, who are blessed with six grandchildren, live in Kali-Kali Village, Rec Iceke Parish, Layima Subdistrict, Uganda.
They remain optimistic that someone will come to their aid and exchange the damaged notes.

Termites chew KSh 729,000
Her story is reminiscent of the Indian Jamalayya who lost 5 lakh (KSh 729,000) that he had saved to build a house.
India.com reports that Jamalayya stayed away from luxury for himself and his family members in order to save up for the project.
He was shocked when he opened the iron safe and discovered that termites had punched huge holes in the banknotes, rendering them useless.
