A homeowner has woken up after a string of hot summer days to an alarming find on his doorstep.

The Sydney resident woke up to find “thousands” of insects infested on her doormat on Monday morning.

They posted a photo of the skin-crawling find on Reddit, trying to come up with an answer as to what they were.

“Woke up to thousands of these bugs dead on my doorstep. what are they?” they wrote.

A Sydney resident has shared a photo of “thousands” of insects (pictured) believed to be winged termites on his doorstep after a string of hot nights

The photograph shows a flock of termites that appear to be winged termites due to their light gold segmented bodies and large opaque wings.

Winged termites swarm out on hot nights after heavy rain in search of a new nest, dropping their wings once a potential nest has been found.

They are a sign that the house is either currently infested or at high risk of being infested, as flying termites do not travel great distances to find a new nest.

Scores of reddit users quickly jumped on the post to warn residents of the impending danger to their homes.

“Move to another house first,” wrote one commenter.

“Pest exterminator here. You probably have a termite nest in/around your building and undoubtedly one on your property. This amount indicates a nest very close by,” wrote another commenter.

“Maybe you should call a pest company. There’s a termite nest nearby,” wrote another commenter.

The resident replied, “It’s done. Even the suspicion is worrying.”

Another commented on the photo himself, saying: “This is really beautiful, you should make it a greeting card!”

The local resident responded to the flood of comments that ridiculed the situation.

“Believe it or not, underneath all of this lies a lovely welcome doormat,” they wrote.
