MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Piles of scattered trash litter a street in the community of South Memphis.
Residents there said they’ve searched for solutions multiple times, but the trash is still in the 600 block of Jennette Place.
A resident who asked to remain anonymous said she had lived near the Jennette Place Apartments for 17 years.
She told FOX13 reporter Lakiya Scott that she recently paid hundreds of dollars for pest control to rid her home of rats caused by nearby trash.
She said she has called 311, even emailed the mayor’s office and contacted the health department in the past.
“Totally unacceptable,” said Jennette Place tenant Daryle Brown.
Local residents told FOX13 they were sick of waking up on a neighborhood street covered in trash.
“Because you live in the ghetto, you don’t have to live like the ghetto,” a local homeowner told us anonymously.
Neighbors complain that the rubbish attracts uninvited guests – rats and raccoons.
“They don’t care if rats run around the place,” Brown said.
Back in December, a local resident sent a video showing the garbage spiraling out of control and being carried onto the streets by rain and flooding.
The resident can be heard commenting on the video: “There hasn’t been any garbage collected from these apartments on Jennette Place for months.”
“We have nowhere to put our rubbish. There should be bigger containers,” Brown said. “My problem is who should pick it up.”
FOX13 has reached out to the City of Memphis, who informed us that the earliest they can get an area supervisor to inspect the site is January 17, since January 16 is a holiday.
“You’re not going to go to Germantown and see this. It’s just South Memphis.”
