Orkin Canada’s annual national list of the trendiest cities is here!
MISSISSAUGA, ON, October 19, 2022 /CNW/ – Multiple lockdowns during the pandemic have prompted bolder rodent activity and migration to residential neighborhoods over the past year. As fears of a pandemic recede and Canadian cities are back in business, rats and mice have regained ample food sources in urban areas.
As winter rolls in, Orkin Canada is reminding homeowners and business owners to take precautions and keep rodents away. *Cities are ranked by the number of rat and mouse treatments the company performed from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022. This ranking includes both domestic and commercial treatments. (CNW Group/Orkin Canada)
“With more food available, there will be exponential population growth. Food availability favors population growth as there will be less competition for food, which will also result in high reproductive potential, high survival and a healthy, thriving population,” said Alice Sinia, Ph.D. entomologist at Orkin Canada.
The pest control company has published its annual national list of the 25 “hottest” cities in Germany Canadawith the City of Toronto Take the lead.
Experts from Orkin Canada report that some of the aggressive rat and mouse behaviors noted during the lockdown, such as cannibalism, “street fighting” and territorialism, are likely to subside as food becomes more plentifully available in trading areas. However, as the population increases, there will also be increased activity and sightings.
Cities are ranked based on the number of commercial and residential rodent treatments (rats and mice) performed by Orkin Canada August 1, 2021 through July 31, 2022.

As cooler weather approaches and rodents may seek a warm shelter, Orkin Canada suggests that you conduct a basic inspection and employ a few rodent protection tactics to prevent rats and mice from entering your homes and frequenting your property :
-
Seal cracks or holes in your foundation, walls and expansion joints
-
Install weatherstrips around windows and doors
-
Screen open air vents and repair worn window screens
-
If possible, keep shrubbery at least three feet from the outside walls of your home
-
Remove sources of moisture such as clogged gutters
-
Practice proper trash storage, be careful to keep trash and old food out of your home, use containers with tight-fitting lids, and don’t let them overflow
-
Store items away from outside walls, but away from the wall and about 18 inches off the floor
-
Rodent proof shed if available. Sheds can be important breeding and refuge sites during winter
