RESIDENTS living on an estate in Wales are battling a rat invasion – after mountains of rubbish dumped by fly-dumpers attract a huge swarm of rodents.

Newport locals say the numbers of incredible creatures increased when the May Without Mowing Council stopped mowing the grass.

But the rats came first as piles of rubbish next to community bins.

And neighbors have now started sharing pictures of the rats to attract the attention of local authorities.

Mike Enea, who has campaigned to reduce litter on the property, told WalesOnline that “serious questions need to be asked” after the council stopped maintaining the margins.

The initiative was started to help bees, butterflies and wildlife.

“It’s in the middle of a property outside people’s homes. It is irresponsible, “said Mr Enea.

“It has turned the property into a breeding ground for rats. It’s disgusting.”

And he said rodents are now sneaking into local lots.

“We now have a situation where these rats invade people’s homes quite often,” he added.

Local residents also claim that Newport City Homes, which looks after the property, removed many of the trash cans – causing fly tipping issues.

The company admitted that there is a “challenge” when people dispose of garbage – but argues that recycling bins have “doubled” in recent months.

And a spokesman for Newport City Council said, “Our regular mowing schedule has started again this month.

“It is not believed that the uncut grass would have caused rats to immigrate to an area.

“It’s more likely they’ve been there and the hot weather encouraged them to go outside.”

Pest controllers say they found giant rats a foot and a half in length – with problems that worsen during lockdown.

And one pied piper who shared footage of a giant rat with bared yellow teeth said our takeaway habit was to blame.

Chris at We Care Pest Control Hull said, “When you think about it, everyone has eaten at home.

“Many get takeaway food and the rubbish bins are overflowing.

“Rats chew through the garbage bags and come under the terrace.”

He said the giant rat he filmed – which measured more than 1.3 feet from nose to tail – was not an unusual size.

“People are really surprised when they see how big a rat can get,” he said.
