Recap: ‘Zootopia+’ Episode Two “The Actual Rodents of Little Rodentia”

In the second installment of Zootopia+, the new short film series expanding the world of Zootopia (2016) from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the animal world embodies the Real Housewives franchise in a post-wedding drama story.

This episode is told entirely in Real Housewives style reality TV format, complete with camera confessions and “authentic” moments captured on screen. Fru Fru (Leah Latham) is preparing for her wedding and has gathered her bridesmaids. “I love my family, love my friends and I love my hair!” she proclaims as we meet the rest of her wedding party. Each is a character in itself, such as party animal ex-con Mandy, who just got out of prison.

They debate who Fru’s Shrew Of Honor will be, but the role is already set: it will be childhood friend and cousin Tru Tru (Michelle Buteau), who arrives in dramatic fashion via miniature helicopter to steal the show. Fru is decidedly less than happy with Tru effortlessly stealing all the attention and taking charge, but lives up to the promise she made when they were 6 that she would take on the role.

The girls head to Klomfield’s dress store to find the bridal outfit and of course there are some clearly two-sided reactions to the dresses on display. Things escalate to the point where polar bear security has to drag the ladies away from each other, with Fru refusing Tru’s suggestion of a dress she brought her.

Fru storms off to enjoy alternative shopping therapy, but nearly dies when she is nearly hit by a runaway giant donut. Luckily, Deputy Hopps steps in and saves the day. The near-death experience makes Fru reconsider her attitude.

She reconciles with Tru, who reveals that the dress she brought was Fru’s mother’s – a simple design, just how she wanted it. Fru realizes that sometimes family knows you better than anyone else.

In a final scene, the girls sniff deeply at a stunning Night Howler bouquet, savoring the scent until the chemicals in the plant drive them into a frenzy. The camera goes black.
