Lake Tahoe areas are being closed after cases of the plague are found in chipmunks.

The US Forest Service for Lake Tahoe announced on Twitter on Tuesday.

“Based on positive plague tests and planned treatments, the Taylor Creek Visitor Center and Kiva Beach parking lots will be closed Sunday through Friday.” said the agency. “The Tallac Site / Kiva Picnic parking lot will be open. Visitor center staff and volunteers will be at the Tallac historic site. ”

pest is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and is typically found in rodent fleas. Most people get the plague by being bitten by an infected flea or by handling an infected animal such as rats, squirrels, chipmunks, and even prairie dogs.

Symptoms of the plague include the sudden onset of high fever and swollen lymph nodes. The infection can be treated in humans and animals if it is recognized and treated at an early stage.

Last month, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE discovered cases the plague also among fleas and animals. A ten-year-old girl from La Plata County died of complications from the plague.

Accordingly the CDPHE, the best ways to avoid the plague are: avoiding fleas, staying away from areas where rodents live, avoiding contact with wild and dead rodents, contacting a pest control company to prevent rodent infestation, contacting a veterinarian, if you experience symptoms in a pet and alert children to these precautions.
