Homeowners were gardening in record numbers that year, and a new survey found gardeners of all ages will be digging in the dirt again in 2021.
The study conducted by Axiom Marketing found that 86% of homeowners plan to keep gardening in 2021. Almost 40% of respondents say they will plant roughly as much as last year, and 47% say they will plant more and expand their garden space next season.
Many homeowners surveyed said they would garden in 2020 because they were busy at home, were a source of movement, and helped manage stress during the pandemic. But mostly, most of them worked in the garden to add beauty to their lives.
“More than half of those surveyed said they just wanted a nice outdoor space,” said Kathleen Hennessy, head of the Axiom Horticulture Marketing Group. “As many of us spend more time at home and more time outside, gardening opened the door to positive activity and feeling good at a time when things were looking rather bleak.”
The gardeners felt overwhelmingly successful last season.
“More than 80% of respondents said they felt successful or very successful doing their gardening in 2020,” adds Hennessy. “This is great news for the horticultural industry. When homeowners feel successful, they are more likely to buy plants, try new ways of gardening, and expand their knowledge. These are all signs that 2021 will be another busy year. ”
