One mother shared her frustration at living on a rat-infested street where residents are surrounded by rodents the size of domestic cats.
Pauline Rooney has reported that in the seven years since moving into her home, she has had an ongoing rat problem as the surrounding residents have been unable to properly clear their trash cans.
The alley behind Pauline’s property is overgrown and overgrown, so that the residents cannot bring their garbage cans into the small courtyards behind their houses, but have to sit on the street for a week.

According to Belfast Live, Pauline has stated that this has resulted in large groups of rats entering the area, making it difficult for local residents on Belfast Street.

Pauline, mother of two, said, “For the past seven years I have had to raise my children completely surrounded by rats. It is not a requirement that one of our children be forced to play in them.
“You see these huge rats everywhere, the size of a cat or a small dog.

“I feel like I’ve been going back and forth to different meetings the entire time I’ve been here to try to resolve the issue, but nothing never seems to happen. Council Pest Control was here this week pouring poison down drains, but I doubt it will do much as there are so many of them.

“Our children wake up countless mornings with dead rats lying in the street. I even have video footage of rats jumping out of a garbage truck onto the men who collect the garbage cans while others scurry down the street, it’s shocking.

“The problem is the alley behind our houses, which is so overgrown that we can’t put our trash cans in the back and since nobody has a front yard, the garbage cans are on the street all the time. But because the alley is not accepted, nobody appears to take care of it or want to do something about it. “
Pauline also says that in an emergency, the alley has become a danger to local residents.

She continued, “If there was a fire in front of our houses, we would be trapped, we couldn’t get out. Nobody should have to live like that.”

The council has stated that the alley is the responsibility of the landowner and that they have baited sewers and gutters in the area as part of a sewer bait program.
A spokesman for Belfast City Council added: “The alley in question will not be accepted and therefore the maintenance of the alley is the responsibility of the landowner.
We are aware of reports of rats in the area and we are currently baiting sewers and gutters as part of the Belfast City Council’s sewer bait program. We encourage residents to contact the service directly to report any issues they may have by calling 02890270431 or emailing pestcontrol@belfastcity.gov.uk. ”
