Bed bugs are a nasty problem and need to be dealt with quickly. One Michigan woman no doubt regrets dealing with a situation where her car was infested with bed bugs. A 31-year-old woman from Pontiac was hospitalized with second degree burns after trying to kill the beetles with fire on July 27, Freep reports:

The woman reportedly had a panic attack because she had bed bugs in her vehicle, according to a report of a serious incident by the Oakland County Sheriff. The woman decided to kill the bed bugs by pouring alcohol in the vehicle and setting it on fire. She accidentally set herself on fire. She was later taken to McLaren Oakland Hospital for treatment for a second degree burn.

The term “kill it with fire” is often used to label pictures of giant bugs, and while it’s a funny line, it can clearly lead to serious danger. Orkin recently released a list of the worst states for bed bugs and it turned out that these cities in Michigan ended up in the top 50:

# 4. Detroit, Michigan
# 10. Grand Rapids, Michigan
# 21. Flint, MI
# 48. Lansing, MI

Indiana also landed 3 places in the top 50 while Ohio had 6 cities, although that study was only from one source. Getting Flint at number 21 may not come as a surprise as bed bugs were found in the student lounge at Mott Community College 2 years ago. Michigan has provided a guide on how to control bed bugs here.
