ATLANTA, March 22, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Miami’s hot for termites. The magical city remains at the top of this year’s Top 50 Termite Cities List published by Orkin today. The top three cities on the list Miami, The angel and Tampa, have kept these spots going strong for three years. After a two-year run in fourth place, new York dropped three spots and was replaced by Washington, DC – A newcomer to the top of the list.
Columbia, SC made the biggest jump this year, advancing eight places from 2020. Waco, Wichita and Austin are all new to the list this year and occupy positions 40, 46 and 47.
With people spending more time at home in 2020, termites and termite damage have likely been seen more frequently than in previous years. In parallel, there have been a record number of storms and hurricanes in 2020 that provide what termites need most in life – moisture.
The list is based on treatment data from the subway areas where Orkin performed the most termite treatments for clients 1st February 2020 – – January 31, 2021. The ranking includes both inpatient and commercial treatments.

“Weather conditions have a direct impact on schools of termites,” he said Glen Ramsey, Orkin entomologist. “Most underground termites swarm in spring and summer, while drywood termites usually swarm in late summer and fall.”
Termite infestation is a threat to all areas of the United States, although underground termite pressures can vary. The Pacific coast and the coastal regions of the southeast are also exposed to the risk of dry wood termites.
“Termites swarm when they’re looking for moisture and food, and with fewer dead trees in urban areas, termites move to residential areas for food and moisture,” Ramsey said.
Property owners can get termites from wooden structures like porches and decks that directly touch the ground. Firewood leaning against the house; Soil that remains moist over the long term from leaking taps or water retention areas near foundations and dead trees or other landscapes near the house. Signs of a termite infestation are:
- A temporary swarm of termites in your home, in the ground, or around the exterior of the home
- Broken or bubbly color
- Wood that sounds hollow when knocked
- Mud pipes on the inside or outside of walls or wooden beams
- Wings dropped by swarmers
- Sightings of Frass (termite droppings) in or near the house
To proactively avoid termites, Orkin recommends homeowners regularly monitor drainage points to ensure they are properly drained, paying special attention to areas around the foundation and on the roof. Also, plug gaps around utility lines, gas lines, and pipes, and cover the outer vents with shields to reduce entry points. Finally, reduce termite food sources by removing any rotting wood, dirt, or landscaping near the home.
