Groups of capybaras, a giant species of South American rodent, invade an upscale suburb of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.

The animals, which are becoming more and more self-confident, wander through streets and gardens in the Northern Delta district.

But resident Gabriel Iglesias said the area’s relationship with the capybaras had deteriorated from “friendly” to “complicated”.

Nordelta was built in 2000 in the wetlands of the Lujan Delta on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.

Since 2019, local residents have reported incidents related to the increase in capybara population, including traffic accidents and attacks on pets.

The capybara is an amphibious herbivorous rodent native to South America that weighs approximately 55 kilograms (120 pounds) and is more than three feet (three feet) tall.

Sebastian Di Martino, a conservation director for the Rewilding Argentina Foundation, said the rodents were being driven into urban areas by the destruction of their wetlands.

In 2020, fires devastated more than 300,000 hectares of wetlands in the Parana Delta.

Di Martino added that there were also fewer predators to keep the capybara population in check.
