As the weather warms across the country, Australians are being reminded that termite season is just around the corner – but there are steps you can take to minimize costly damage.
Entomologist, termite expert and board member of the Australian Environmental Pest Managers Association, Dr. Don Ewart, spoke to Melbourne’s The Morning Show about how to protect your home.

Ewart explained that the months leading up to summer are the best time for termite activity.
“It’s warming up in the southern states and the termites are getting active … it’s still pretty warm in the north, but it’s not too wet, so it’s a time across the country when termites really get going,” he said.

Ewart said the cost of repairing termite damage could skyrocket depending on how quickly it was removed.
“Some of them are really cheap, a few thousand dollars, fix that, fix the lines that are the problem. Sometimes it’s half a million or more – it can be terrible, some houses are being demolished. “

Regular home inspections are the best way to avoid a costly problem that Ewart recommended.
“Anything built since the mid-1990s should have a good termite management system, anything before that is likely wide open, it’s the ongoing review that really matters,” he said.

Ewart also explained why using bug spray against termites was discouraged.
“That can cost you a fortune, it takes you away from all the easy-to-get places, that’s the worst thing you can do,” he said.
