Conversations on culinary herbs and fruit plants will be the topic of the East Baton Rouge Master Gardening session from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on May 6 at the East Baton Rouge Regional Branch Library at Jones Creek, 6222 Jones Creek Road.

The program is free and open to the public. Registration is not necessary. Audience is limited to 25.

Nancy Jurasinski, a master gardener from Louisiana, will speak about “Beyond Basil: All-Season Herbs” at the first session. Find out which herbs grow best in autumn and which ones thrive in spring.

“Thanks to the mild winters in Louisiana, we are fortunate enough to grow herbs all year round,” says Jurasinski.

The lecture includes methods for preserving your harvest and easy recipes with herbs that come fresh from the garden.

In the second presentation of the evening, LMG will examine Leo Broders “Favorite Fruit Production in Louisiana”.

“At Baton Rouge, we are very fortunate to be able to produce many types of fruit that provide good nutrition and the gardening pleasure of an edible landscape,” he says.

Participants learn how to harvest and consume tree, bush or grapevines from a home garden. The nutritional values of various fruits are also discussed.

The next Library Series program will take place on May 20th at the EWC Fairwood Regional Branch Library and will feature lectures on “The Amazing Hibiscus: Your Culinary and Pharmaceutical Gem” and “Attracting Pollinators.”

Spring and summer programs focus on pesticide-free insect control, raised bed gardening, native flowering shrubs, and soil basics.
