A Duncan school and six houses were evacuated Friday after someone who gardened on Auchinachie Road informed North Cowichan / Duncan RCMP that explosives had been discovered.

Classes at Ecole Mount Prevost Elementary were canceled for the day, and students and staff gathered on the Somenos soccer fields, where students were picked up.

Mike Russell, spokesman for the Cowichan Valley School District, said the school had been evacuated “out of caution”.

Police said the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit had been called up but did not arrive by the afternoon because it was from an inland operation.

“We are in the preparatory phase of the investigation, but these explosives appear to have historically been stored where they were found, but that has yet to be determined,” said BC RCMP spokesman Cpl. Chris Manseau.

He said the emergency social service was in the area to help the evacuated residents.
