Many people will choose this long weekend, but for some of us it is a good opportunity to have a good time at home. It’s also a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your home.
New research commissioned by Bunnings has found that one in four Australians plans to do some home improvement over the Easter break. We’ve all spent a lot of time at home over the past year, so the long weekend is the perfect opportunity to get these chores done around the house.
Bunnings DIY expert Mitch Mclean gave us his best tips on how to be successful with your home projects this weekend. So get your tools ready.
painting
Bunnings’ research shows that 22% of DIY projects during the Easter break will involve painting.
Preparation is the key to painting around the house. Mclean says you should prep your walls by filling holes or cracks and sanding surfaces if necessary. He also has some pointers on how to paint these tricky areas:
“If you’re cutting your edges with a brush, don’t be too far ahead of yourself. It’s best to cut out a section and then use a roller to blend that area while it’s still damp. If you let the cut section dry, this area will be double coated and a prominent border will appear as the paint dries. “
It’s also worth considering water-based paints instead of oil-based paints. According to Mclean, water-based paints have less odor, make surfaces last longer, and are easier to clean.
Gardening
The top project is predicted to be gardening during the Easter holidays. Almost 30% of respondents say the farm is at the top of their to-do list.
Of course, every garden project starts with the right tools. Mclean says now is a good time to check your garden tools and look for any damage. Make sure to sharpen and oil them if necessary.
Tools that are easy to use make work easier. And if you are missing something in your toolbox, now is the time to get it.
He also said now is a great time to add a little love to your garden before the cooler months set in:
“After a fantastic growing season, it’s a perfect time to remove weeds, dirt and dead plants from your garden beds and place them back on a clean slate. It’s a great idea to take this opportunity to apply compost, manure, and a thick layer of heat retentive mulch to await when the temperatures will start to drop. “
Don’t forget to mow the lawn. Mitch suggests aerating your lawn to keep it looking healthy year round. Use a pitchfork or aerator to break up hard and compacted soil. This helps oxygen, water, and nutrients penetrate the grass root system.
Other DIY tips
Painting and gardening are two of the most feasible projects for a four-day weekend. But other participants said they would try to de-clutter and update their outside areas during the break.
